Autumn Conference Round up
16 November 2013
Gregynog Hall

We would like to thank everyone who attended what was a hugely successful party conference last weekend.

Not only was the venue immensely beautiful, but we heard some terrific speeches from Kirsty Williams AM, Chris Davies MEP and Montgomeryshire candidate Jane Dodds, had some valuable training sessions and debated some hugely important policy motions. We would also like to thank Lord Carlile for a truly fantastic after-dinner speech.

Unlike the other parties, our members decide on our party policy. Conference decided:

  • M4 - Members voted to support a solution to develop the A48 Southern Distributor Road to move local traffic off the M4 and reduce congestion, whilst ruling out supporting a £1 billion relief road south of Newport. This solution would form part of a greater transport strategy for the South-East Wales region through improving rail and bus services as well. Read more here.
  • Higher Education - Members voted to introduce a more sustainable HE funding system. This would remove the Tuition Fee Grant and instead establish a Student Living Support Grant to help students with the cost of living while ensuring that universities receive the funding they need. Read more here.
  • Local Government - Members debated the future of local government and asked policy committee to provide a consultation paper in time for Spring 2014 Conference.
  • HS2 Topical Motion - Conference reaffirmed support for HS2 and called for high speed rail to go beyond HS2 and include cities in Wales.

European Campaign

Chris Davies MEP, Aled Roberts AM Chair of the European Campaign and Alec Dauncey Welsh Lib Dem European candidate, all spoke passionately about how our key message for next year's elections will be that we are the party of IN.

Alec said, "Welsh Lib Dems want Britain to stay in the EU because millions of Welsh and British jobs depend on it. We're fighting to defend British and Welsh jobs, create millions more and putting thousands of pounds back into your pocket by supporting EU membership."

Energy Consultation

At Conference, we launched our Energy Consultation. The paper is available here and if you'd like to respond, please send any comments to Policy@WelshLibDems.org.uk as soon as possible, preferably by December 1st.

If you want to respond quickly yourself, then we've also created a survey with some of the key questions, which you can answer here.
