Conservatives’ neglect of Wales goes beyond Secretary of State

Ahead of the vote of no-confidence in Secretary of State for Wales Alun Cairns in the Assembly this afternoon, the Welsh Liberal Democrats have claimed the UK Government’s problems with Wales go far beyond the Secretary of State.

Following the UK Governments rejection of the Swansea Tidal Lagoon and earlier cancellation of electrification to Swansea, AMs will vote on an unprecedented motion of no-confidence in the Secretary of State.

Welsh Liberal Democrat Leader Jane Dodds commented:

It’s clear the UK Government will continue to neglect Wales in favour of South East England and the Secretary of State must bear his fair share of responsibility for this. His role is to stand up for Wales in the UK Government and he is failing time after time.

Whether it’s the rejection of the Swansea Tidal Lagoon, the cancellation of electrification to Swansea or the hard Brexit that will devastate the Welsh economy, the Conservatives clearly do not care about Wales. Even positive steps like the scrapping of the Severn Bridge Tolls are taking place four years after we first called for it.

The sad fact is the UK Government’s neglect of Wales goes far beyond the Secretary of State, it goes to the heart of this government. The Conservatives simply do not value Wales and our interests. If Wales is to be taken seriously by the UK Government we don’t need a new Secretary of State, we need a new Government.
