Autumn Statement falls far short of delivering for Wales, Mark Williams MP

Philip Hammond has today published the UK Government's plans for the future of our country outlining how this Government will ready our economy and communities for Brexit. Commenting, Mark Williams, Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats and MP for Ceredigion said;

“This must be a Statement that not only delivers for Wales in the short-term but sets us on a steady footing so we can weather the Brexit storm.

“The Welsh Liberal Democrats welcome the investment in Wales through the growth deal for North Wales, the Swansea Bay city region deal, and much needed infrastructure investment. I also welcome yet another increase in the tax-free personal allowance to £11,500 - a key priority for the Liberal Democrats’ in the last government to support hard working families and put money back in their pockets.

“Yet today’s announcement falls far short of delivering for Wales. The omission of the Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon is a telling sign of this Government’s flailing commitment to our environment. Philip Hammond may pat himself on the back for committing £400m to Wales, but this is a token gesture from a government totally out of touch with the needs of Wales and our communities.

“The hand-outs offered today are a sticking plaster for the enormous challenges that families across Wales and the UK will face once this Government, hell bent on a hard-Brexit, pushes the eject button.

"We need a clear and unequivocal statement that they will do all they can to make sure we stay in the EU single market, which is so important to the businesses and farmers up and down Wales."
