Brexit clock ticking

As the crucial EU summit gets underway, the Welsh Liberal Democrats have claimed it’s not too late for Theresa May to change course and protect Wales and the UK from the devastating consequences of Brexit.

Despite assurances the UK Government would have a detailed White Paper on the UK’s future with the EU ready in time for this summit, no White Paper has been released. No significant breakthroughs are expected at the summit.

Welsh Liberal Democrat Leader Jane Dodds commented:

2 years on from the referendum and with only 9 months until Brexit, the UK Government is still in crisis and hopelessly divided. Airbus’ warning has been ignored, we’re no closer to solving the Irish border issue and we don’t even know which unworkable customs ‘solution’ the UK Government favours.

It’s not too late for Theresa May to be bold on Brexit, put the rhetoric aside and act in the country’s best interests. The Prime Minister must stand up to her party and keep the UK in the Single Market and Customs Union. This is the only way to prevent a hard border down the Irish Sea, offer certainty to major employers like Airbus and ensure Welsh farmers will continue to have access to vital European export markets.

Following the rejection of the Swansea Tidal Lagoon, would anyone trust the Conservatives to act in Wales’ interests or give Wales the funding it needs after Brexit? Only the people can be trusted to decide Brexit. The Welsh Liberal Democrats are the only party calling for the people to be given the final say and the opportunity to choose an exit from Brexit.
